10 Golden rules

Keep your money safe with these 10 simple Golden Rules to help protect yourself online.

  1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Create complex passwords for your accounts and avoid using the same passwords across multiple sites. Your phone or your internet browser can suggest and remember strong passwords for you.
  2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Add an extra layer of security by enabling 2FA wherever possible. It makes it a little more complicated to sign in, but it makes it a LOT more difficult to hack your accounts.
  3. Your Phone is your Friend. Use your phone’s fingerprint or face recognition features to add even more security.
  4. Be Wary of Unsolicited Communications: Don’t click on links or download attachments from unknown or unexpected emails, texts, or messages. Only access your bank accounts via their app or by typing their website address into your browser.
  5. Stay up to date: your bank’s website will have the latest information you need to know about online scams and threats.
  6. Monitor Your Accounts Regularly: Check your bank statements and account activity regularly for any unauthorised transactions.
  7. Use Secure Networks: Avoid accessing sensitive information over public Wi-Fi. Use your home internet or mobile data instead.
  8. Keep Software Updated: Ensure your operating system, browser, security software and banking apps are always up to date to protect against vulnerabilities.
  9. Take your time: if you feel pressured into making a decision, be suspicious. Tell them you’ll think about it and either hang up or delete the message.
  10. Beware of Too-Good-To-Be-True Offers: Always remember: if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
