As payment methods multiply and become increasingly fragmented, Decathlon set out to simplify its checkout experience, improve conversion and reduce costs — without adding any friction for its customers. Which is why they wanted to be Wero early adopters. The company went live with Wero at checkout on their German website in July 2026 - driven by strong consumer demand for the solution.
Merchant spotlight: Decathlon
Decathlon, one of the world’s largest sports retailers, is built around a clear mission: to make sport accessible through simplicity, from its stores to its digital experience. That same principle applies to payments.
Keeping checkout simple
For Decathlon, Wero stood out because it is both easy to understand and easy to use.
As Axel Müller, Payment & Return Manager at Decathlon Germany, explains: “Checkout must be fast, mobile-first, and intuitive. Any extra friction like requiring a new app or asking people to take unfamiliar steps can reduce conversion.
"As a European company, it is highly important for us to actively support a sovereign, pan-European payment solution from the very beginning. Beyond that, it’s important for customers that things are easy to understand, and an instant transfer doesn’t need to be explained."
Instead of introducing a new app or behaviour, Wero simply lets customers pay directly from their own banking app, removing friction and building on existing trust. Customers are already familiar with their banking app, so there are no additional hurdles.
Better experience, better economics. Real impact.
By integrating Wero as an early adopter, Decathlon combines customer benefits with clear business value:
Frictionless mobile checkout
Higher conversion through fewer steps
Trusted payment experience
Customers confirm payments in their usual banking app
Easy and secure
Fast authentication with built-in security
Lower costs
Optimised payment mix, reduced cost per transaction and faster settlement
European solution
Supporting a pan-European payment ecosystem that delivers consistent user experience across markets
Ready as customer demand grows
Decathlon is taking a pragmatic approach. They are not simply adopting for the sake of being first, but are ready as demand grows. “We wanted to be ready to convert customers quickly and offer Wero as a solution. We definitely see an opportunity to attract customers through the integration of Wero,” says Muller.
Decathlon is now live in Germany and Belgium and preparing France for the end of the year. It will be available to customers using their banking as well as the Wero standalone app. It marks its first step in bringing this simple, instant payment experience to its customers. Expansion across European markets and rollout to physical stores (POS) will follow as they plan for a seamless omnichannel payment experience.
