Nespresso believes the best payment experience is the one customers barely notice.
Whether customers are ordering capsules online or shopping in a Nespresso boutique, they expect a payment experience that is secure, fast and effortless.
"We know it is important for our customers that payments are secure and seamless," said Ruben Cauwenberghs, Internal Control Specialist responsible for payments in Belgium and Luxembourg at Nespresso. "The fewer clicks, the less time it takes, the easier it is for customers to complete their purchase."
That customer-first mindset is one reason Nespresso's Belgian and Luxembourg operations began exploring Wero as a new payment solution.
As a business operating across multiple countries, one of Nespresso's key challenges is navigating an increasingly fragmented payments landscape. Adding a new payment method is much more than a simple technical decision: every solution must deliver real value while avoiding unnecessary complexity for customers, employees and the business itself.
Every new payment method must demonstrate a clear business case, sufficient customer reach and technical feasibility before it can be adopted. Evaluating, approving and integrating new solutions across local markets, headquarters and payment partners can be a lengthy process.
The company must carefully assess whether a payment solution addresses a genuine business need and can serve a large enough customer base to justify investment.
Nespresso’s goal is not to offer the widest possible range of payment methods. Instead, the company focuses on solutions that can combine broad customer reach, a trusted experience and operational simplicity.
Built on European banking infrastructure and designed to work across markets, Wero aligns with Nespresso's desire for simpler, more scalable payments. The solution also supports the company's broader objectives of reducing complexity, maintaining customer trust and serving customers consistently online and in-store.
As Cauwenberghs noted, Nespresso looks for solutions that offer the biggest penetration possible for its customers.
When we look at a unified solution such as Wero, we see an easier approach. There is an simpler way to connect the dots and get to the result."
For Nespresso, the future of payments extends beyond e-commerce. The company wants to create a consistent experience wherever customers interact with the brand, from online checkout to point of sale in its boutiques.
As Wero expands into point-of-sale payments, QR codes and future NFC capabilities, Nespresso sees opportunities to make checkout even more intuitive, giving customers flexibility while keeping the experience simple.
"You finalise your payment, tap one button, and the customer can choose to use their watch, phone, card or app," said Cauwenberghs.
As Europe moves towards a more unified payments landscape, Nespresso sees value in solutions that can work consistently across borders while maintaining the high standards customers expect.
Ultimately, it all comes back to what matters most: making payments as easy as possible for customers.
Nespresso Belgium and Luxembourg will go live with Wero online check in 2027.
